Purification of South African phosphogypsum for use

The impurities in phosphogypsum greatly restrict its industrial use in Portland cement. We have investigated a method to remove the phosphorus impurities present in South African phosphogypsums, and found that the combination of a thermal and a sulphuric acid treatment was successful in removing most of the harmful phosphorus impurities.
